An Asian wedding is rarely a single day. Depending on the family, you may be invited to a mehndi, a nikah or wedding ceremony, a reception and a walima, each with its own mood. If you prefer western clothes, or simply do not want to buy a heavily embellished outfit for one evening, there is plenty you can wear that looks right and respects the occasion. Here is a practical guide for guests.

The general rules

  • Dress up, not down. Asian weddings are formal and colourful. A smart outfit will never look out of place; a casual one will.
  • Cover more than you would at a western wedding. Longer hemlines, sleeves and higher necklines are the safe choice, especially for religious ceremonies and when elders are present.
  • Avoid white and black head to toe. Some families associate all-white or all-black with mourning. Use them as accents rather than the whole outfit.
  • Do not compete with the bride. Skip heavy red and anything that looks bridal.
  • Bring a layer. Venues can be cold in winter and outdoor marquees colder still.

What to wear to each event

Mehndi or sangeet: colour and movement

This is the most relaxed and the most colourful event. Expect dancing, sitting on cushions and plenty of photos. A co-ord set with wide-leg trousers or culottes is ideal because you can move freely. Go for warm colours or bold prints, and wear flats or a low heel. Our two piece separates and Hassal East floral suits work well here.

Nikah or wedding ceremony: covered and elegant

For the ceremony itself, choose your most covered look: a long dress with sleeves, or a tailored suit with a longer top. If the ceremony is in a mosque or religious venue, carry a scarf to cover your hair. Soft, refined colours such as dusty pink, sage, champagne or navy are always appropriate.

Reception or walima: evening glamour

This is where you can dress for impact. A long dress in a rich colour, a structured cape set or a knit suit with faux fur detail all look elegant in evening lighting. Our faux fur knit suits and capes are a smart choice for winter receptions, keeping you warm without hiding the outfit under a coat. Add metallic heels and a small clutch.

Dresses that work for Asian weddings

Look for midi or maxi lengths, sleeves and a fabric with some richness: a textured tweed, a cable knit in a deep colour, or a dress with embellishment. A belted knit dress gives a flattering shape while staying warm and covered for a winter wedding. Browse our dresses. If a dress you love is shorter or sleeveless, layer it over slim trousers and a fine long-sleeve top.

Shoes and bags

Heels look beautiful in photos, but you may be standing, dancing or walking across a lawn for hours. Choose a strap heel with a secure fit, or bring a pair of flats in your bag for later in the night. Crystal and metallic heels lift a simple outfit instantly; see our heels. For bags, a small structured bag or a pouch with a chain strap holds your phone, lipstick and a gift envelope without getting in the way.

Jewellery and finishing touches

Asian weddings are an occasion to wear statement jewellery. Pick one focal point, such as chandelier earrings or a bold cuff, and keep the rest minimal so the outfit does not look busy. Keep a scarf or shawl with you for ceremonies and colder venues.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a dress to an Asian wedding?

Yes. A long dress with sleeves in a rich or soft colour is appropriate for most events. Avoid very short, very revealing or all-white styles, and carry a scarf if there is a religious ceremony.

What colours should guests avoid?

Avoid heavy bridal red and head-to-toe white or black. Almost every other colour is welcome, and brighter shades suit the mehndi especially well.

Do I need a different outfit for every event?

Not necessarily. A co-ord set can be styled differently for each event: flats and simple jewellery for the mehndi, then heels, a cape and statement earrings for the reception.

What should I wear to a winter Asian wedding?

A knit suit, a faux fur cape set or a long knit dress keeps you warm without a heavy coat over your outfit. Add closed heels and a shawl for outdoor venues.
